Packing it in

I worked for awhile packing up my old classroom in preparation for the move to the new school. Unfortunately, the air conditioning wasn't on, so I only lasted for about two hours. I left in a puddle of sweat, totally exasperated with the lack of progress.

It seems that I will be teaching only math and science next year. For the past 5 years I've been teaching math and reading, so all my reading resources will have to be stored somewhere. There is no where in the new classroom for the tons of boxes I have. arrgh!

A colleague stopped by my room to wish me luck. She had heard that I was leaving and she knew I would be "so happy" in the new school. I wish I could convince myself of the same thing.

I read the employee handbook for the new school today. Whew! Never read the employee handbook. Schools always treat teachers like they are idiots. If we are truly idiots, why are you hiring us to teach the kids?Teaching in a private school is going to be a lot different than teaching in public, I can see that already. There is a lot of emphasis on appearances and making sure that the children, the grounds, and the school look good to prospective customers, I mean students.

Hmmmmm?

Bravo! I think, even with the emphasis on superficialities, the private school would have to keep to a higher standard of excellence, in order to compete. You will benefit, I'm sure, from enjoying a higher caliber of student and more participation from parents. I applaud your dedication to your students. I think teachers are the greatest and second only to parents in their importance in the lives of children.

By the way, congratulations on your new blog. Thanks for stopping by mine.
